A twelve year-old girl in special education classes wet her pants at school, and has subsequently been charged with disorderly conduct. Police say she will be able to avoid a fine if she performs community service.
The school authorities state that the girl wet said pants after being asked to wash some pots and pants in the kitchen and claim the act was deliberate. I have a few questions...
1) Shouldn't pots and pans be washed by unionized support staff and not children enrolled in special education. Logic dictates that students shouldn't be performing labour at school
2) Even if the act was deliberate, should school authorities really be calling the police on students for such acts? Sure, a call to the police is likely warranted if a student stabs a teacher, brings a gun to school, etc. But wetting one's pants? That seems a bit extreme and under no circumstances should the police be called. I would expect a bit more of school authorities. Can you imagine the 911 operator in this case? "This is 911, what's your emergency?" "Yes, a twelve year old student just wet her pants, please send officers immeadiately."
